La Castañeda took its name from a psychiatric hospital located in Mexico City and surfaced during the early '90s. Its first release was the independent album Servicios Generales, after which the group signed with BMG's Culebra imprint and delivered Servicios Generales II in 1993; BMG/Ariola handled the international edition the following year. Fronted by singer Salvador Moreno, the outfit favored dark venues for its deep and obscure material, an approach that suited the brooding mood of its Latin alternative pop/rock sound. Following the 1995 album EL Globo Negro and 1996's El Hijo de Plata, the band self-produced Trance for release on Castañeda Records-Pentagrama and concluded its run with the farewell tour Desaparición (Disappearance) at the end of 2000.
