Biography
In the closing years of the 1990s, Mexican alternative outfit Santa Sabina came together once former actress Rita Guerrero encountered Los Sicotrópicos and the two sides merged their concepts into an initial venture titled Vox Tanatos. The project soon adopted the name Santa Sabina to pay homage to saint Maria Sabina. Guitarist Pablo Valero and keyboardist Jacobo Lieberman formed part of the original roster, though Otoala and Lach later stepped into those roles. A self-titled debut appeared in December 1992, and Símbolos followed in 1994 with Adrian Belew handling production. By then the group had gained notice for staging benefit concerts on behalf of indigenous communities. Shows at Mexico City venue El Hábito supplied the material for 1995’s Concierto Acústico. Mystical leanings resurfaced on the 1996 album Babel, unveiled during a live presentation at the Metropolitan Theatre. The subsequent year yielded an Unplugged session recorded for MTV Latino.
