An alternative rock ensemble originating from Mexico City came into being in 1995 when ex-Sangre Azteca guitarist José Manuel Aguilera joined forces with bassist Federico Fong, enlisting the talents of invited drummer Alfonso André and chorist Cecilia Toussaint for their performances. Drawing influence from acts like King Crimson and Radiohead while seeking a distinctive sound, la Barranca committed their debut record to tape in 1996 following an offer from the independent imprint Opción Sonica. The resulting El Fuego de la Noche paved the way for La Tempestad in 1998, an effort issued through BMG. Upon inking a deal with Manicomio, the affiliate of Universal, the group unveiled their third full-length at Hard Rock Live in Mexico City during September 2000. As Rueda de los Tiempos garnered favorable critical response, la Barranca embarked on a series of concerts across Mexico and the U.S.
