In the early 1990s, four university students from Chile—Marcelo Muñoz, Claudio Valenzuela, Gabriel Vigliensoni, and Francisco González—established the alternative band Lucybell after absorbing the sounds of British alternative rock. Their initial opportunity for a recording contract arrived when EMI expressed interest in including the group on the compilation Los Grandes Valores del Under. During 1993 the band completed its debut video, “De Sudor y Ternura,” and contributed a track to the second collective release, Con el Corazón Aquí. By the close of 1994 Mario Breuer had produced Peces, which quickly earned gold certification in Chile while its single “Lunas” appeared on the country’s leading charts. In 1996 Lucybell received invitations to the MTV Latino programs Playa MTV and Hora Prima. That March the group performed at Festival Rock al Parque in Bogotá, Colombia. August saw the release of the EP Mataz, followed two months later by the album Viajar. Throughout 1997 the band connected with audiences across the Americas, touring Mexico and appearing in the U.S. cities of Las Vegas and Los Angeles. A self-titled album emerged in 1998. The following year Marcelo Muñoz and Gabriel Vigliensoni departed to pursue separate paths. After Eduardo Caces joined, Lucybell issued Amanece in May 2000.
