Formed in Mexico during the late 1960s, the ensemble later known as el Tri first appeared under the name Three Souls in My Mind and delivered its material exclusively in English through the first two albums. Fronted by Alejandro Lora, the group came to be viewed as a foundational force in Latin rock. Three Souls in My Mind performed at the 1971 Avándano Festival, widely called the Mexican Woodstock, drawing the largest crowd the band had yet encountered. After issuing Simplemente el Tri in 1985, which included the hit singles “Triste Canción de Amor” and “Vicioso del Rocanrol,” el Tri received a gold record. Participation in a Hispanic rock festival in Madrid led directly to a tour of the United States. The band’s catalog features three notable live albums recorded at Santa Martha, Hollywood’s Palladium, and Mexico City. An award from the Mexican Cinematographic Academy recognized the group’s contribution to the film Un Año Perdido. The Grammy-nominated album Cuando Tú No Estas arrived in 1998. Three Souls in My Mind gave its first live performance on October 12, 1968. To mark the 33rd anniversary of that debut, Sinfónico, Vol. 2 was released, and the festival El Tri-Fest took place at Mountain View’s Shoreline Amphitheater.
