In 1983 the Mexican rock group Botellita de Jerez was established by vocalist and guitarist Sergio Arau, drummer Francisco Berrios, and bassist Armando Vega-Gil. Their chief accomplishment involved shaping a distinctive Latin rock approach that blended humor with irony, an approach that at times drew misunderstanding from journalists. The band’s early recordings comprised Charrocanrol in 1983, the self-titled Botellita de Jerez in 1984, and La Venganza del Hijo de Guacarock in 1986. Arau’s exit in 1988 brought Santiago Ojeda, Sr. González, and Benjamín Alarcón into the lineup, opening a subsequent phase in the band’s trajectory. Following the 1994 album Forjando Patria, Fernando Andrade stepped in for Ojeda, after which the group issued Superespecial Desenchufado and El Ultimo Guacarock in 1997. The same year Botellita de Jerez disbanded following a farewell concert at Mexico City’s Metropolitan Theatre. A brief reunion took place in 1999.
