Intimidating frontman Luke Lloyd guided the deliberately aggressive, heavy metal quartet that came together during the mid-1990s after an encounter aboard a London Underground train. Guitarist Martin Bourne, bassist Jules McBride and drummer Rob Lewis opted to sign with Earache Records alongside Lloyd, turning down alternative proposals. The group participated in the imprint’s NextGen package tour of 1998 prior to recording sessions helmed by Colin Richardson, who had previously worked with Machine Head and Fear Factory. Their debut album Greed drew unfavorable parallels to Korn and Tool, associations the musicians found displeasing. Additionally, Greed’s artwork gained attention for its depiction of sperm fertilizing an egg.
