Biography
Rei Brown, the New York-based singer and producer, fuses indie electronic sounds with lo-fi R&B and pop to create a dreamy and captivating style that drew millions of streams during the final years of the 2010s and the start of the 2020s. Born and raised in Japan, he moved to the U.S. in 2011 to chase a music career and trained in singing and songwriting at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. A multi-instrumentalist inclined toward atmospheric production, he soon issued material under the alias raybaboon, attracting streaming listeners to his self-titled 2014 debut through the track “Picture Frames.” The 2016 EP Lungs, released under the name Rei Brown, broadened that blend by incorporating lo-fi live instrumentation, lounge vibes, and electronic pop textures. Already settled in New York, he kept refining his approach over the following years, strengthening his streaming footprint with songs such as 2017’s “Street Fighter” and the 2018 EP series Lovers I and II. “Bubble” marked his initial 2020 release. Two years afterward he put out “Could I Be Somebody” and “Thinking About You,” the second of which featured a collaboration with Joji.
