Rhea's Obsession cultivates a gothic aesthetic rooted in Greek mythology while folding in Celtic and Bulgarian elements to shape its singular electro-industrial voice. The project took shape in 1995 when guitarist Jim Field joined forces with classically trained vocalist Sue Hutton. The pair scored the experimental film Tabulae Anatomacae Sex, layering in an atmospheric sensibility akin to Dead Can Dance that drew critical notice and led to further film-music assignments. They later supplied arrangements for ongoing Canadian programs on MuchMusic and Bravo, yet the duo also sought a path in recorded releases. In 1996 Hutton and Field recruited a touring lineup—Ryan Bloomer on drums, Rakesh Tewari and Ed Hanley on tablas and percussion, and Chris Gagnon on keyboards—to support the debut album Initiation. College-radio acclaim followed, and the recording’s rich tribal textures helped lift Canada’s goth rock and darkwave underground into wider view while expanding the band’s airplay. Several compilations drawn from their cinematic work surfaced through the remainder of the decade, accompanied by the follow-up album Between Earth and Sky.
