Rock Mafia

Rock Mafia originated when Tim James and Antonina Armato joined forces. From the 2000s forward, the production pair lent their buoyant pop touch to recordings by Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, and Miley Cyrus. Their first outing as a unit came in 2010 with the single “The Big Bang,” a Billboard Hot 100 entry that placed James on lead vocals. Steady activity throughout the decade culminated in the release of their debut EP, Songs for the Eternal Optimist, in 2020.

Before formally establishing their production team and label, James and Armato had each logged separate studio credits across a broad roster of performers. Their early focus remained largely on Disney-affiliated acts until they expanded to outside projects with Zedd, Elohim, JoJo, Illenium, and others. The same year they issued “The Big Bang,” whose video featured Cyrus and registered on the Hot 100. International traction followed with Aura Dione’s “Friends,” which charted strongly in Germany and Austria before reaching number one in Poland.

Their first full-length project, Mixtape Vol. 1, arrived in 2012 and contained the electronic dance collaboration “Morning Sun,” again with Cyrus and co-produced by Diplo and Tiësto. Further singles appeared later in the decade, among them 2016’s “I Am,” which enlisted Wyclef Jean, Bill Kaulitz of Tokio Hotel, and David Correy, and 2019’s “My Family,” recorded for the animated The Addams Family film and featuring Migos, Karol G, and Snoop Dogg. In 2020 Rock Mafia issued their first official EP, the upbeat Songs for the Eternal Optimist.
