Although RUSSELL! burst into wider view as a 2020 viral phenomenon thanks to the millions of streams generated by “SCARLETT’S WEEKEND,” the sleek, guitar-laced R&B cut actually marked the newest stage in a trajectory that already stretched nearly ten years. The Canadian vocalist had launched his path as a rapper before shifting into the role of an introspective, backward-glancing balladeer.

Russell Gilbert Llantino entered the world in Mississauga, Ontario, in 1993 and grew up in the neighboring city of Brampton. During the late 2000s and early 2010s he recorded rap material under the moniker D-Pryde. Domestic notice followed when he supported J. Cole and issued the 2013 EP Canal & Richvale, yet momentum stalled after disputes with BMG and the untimely death of his mother. He resurfaced in 2017 as Pryde, now blending swift verses, trap production, and heartfelt vocal numbers. Projects such as Loverboy (2017) and LOVELY. (2019), along with tracks including “Things to Do” and “Emily OG,” each drew millions of streams; by the time boy lonely arrived in 2020 the identities of Pryde and RUSSELL! had grown virtually indistinguishable.

Stand-alone releases “SCARLETT’S WEEKEND” (2020), “FMU” (2021), and “Lindsay’s Freestyle” (2021) further expanded his reach under the RUSSELL! banner, as did his 2023 reading of Wham!’s “Last Christmas” and his 2024 interpretation of Tamia’s “Officially Missing You.” The single “Lady,” issued in 2024, previewed Dearly Loved, his inaugural full-length under the RUSSELL! name.
