Although the ensemble occasionally expanded to include as many as seventeen musicians, Söhne Mannheims earned their greatest recognition through frontman Xavier Naidoo, widely regarded as the leading German R&B vocalist of his era. Following the breakthrough success of his 3P label debut Nicht von Dieser Welt, the rising star set aside his solo work in 2000 to record with Söhne Mannheims, a project he had originally launched in 1995 alongside keyboardist and co-producer Michael Herberger. The initial roster featured keyboardist Florian Sitzmann, guitarists Michael Koschorreck and Andreas Bayless, bassist Robbee Mariano, drummers Ralf Gustke and Bernd Herrman, DJ Billy Davis, and backing vocalists J-Luv, Claus Eisenmann, Rolf Stahlofen, and Tino Oak. Additional contributions came from guests Jah Meek, Patrick Caputulo, Marlon B., and Uwe "Barton" Schäfer on the group’s 2000 debut album Zion, which featured the hit single “Geh' Devon Aus,” a number two entry on the German pop charts.

The collective then entered a period of inactivity while Naidoo revived his solo path, returning in 2002 with the number one album Zwischenspiel/Alles für den Herrn. Their follow-up studio effort, Noiz, arrived in 2004 and reached the top of the German charts, driven by the Top Ten singles “Vielleicht” and “Und Wenn Ein Lied.” A live recording, Power of the Sound, surfaced in 2005, with Wettsingen in Schwetzingen (MTV Unplugged) following in 2008. The 2009 album Iz On climbed into the Top Five in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, a performance matched two years later by Barrikaden von Eden. A new single, “One Love,” appeared in 2013. Naidoo again pursued solo activities the next year, yet the remaining members issued ElyZion without him in 2014. Naidoo later rejoined the lineup with co-founder Michael Herberger, restoring the total to fourteen musicians for the 2017 release MannHeim, which again ranked among the Top Ten albums in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
