Sei A

Originally hailing from Glasgow yet now based in London, Sei A is the alias under which Andy Graham crafts an array of dance music that spans Basic Channel–style ambient dub-techno and evocative U.K. garage to straightforward, vocal-led tech-house. After issuing several EPs and the stylistically varied 2008 debut album Editing Shadows on Missive, he drew interest from International Deejay Gigolo, Turbo, and Kompakt, eventually establishing a sustained association with Aus Music that yielded the 2016 full-length Space in Your Mind.

In 2003 Graham first put out deep-house and tech-house material alongside Gordon Logan as the Glasgow duo Seinan; the pair also appeared as Osaka Ultras for the 2007 single “A Matter of Time.” He issued a few EPs under the name Droido in 2006 and 2007, yet his output grew markedly once he adopted the Sei A moniker, beginning with the 2007 EP Master of One. Incorporating restrained vocals amid intricate rhythms and evolving melodies, he placed multiple singles throughout 2008, several of which were collected on Editing Shadows. The non-album track “Meth” marked the inaugural release on his own Seinan Music imprint, while the sensuous “Chinese Whispers” surfaced on DJ Hell’s International Deejay Gigolo in 2009.

Once Tiga became an admirer, Sei A’s club-oriented Lazers EP appeared via Turbo in 2010, followed later that year by the more exploratory, song-focused White Rainbow. Turbo subsequently issued 2011’s Frozen Flower and 2012’s Flux, both of which incorporated post-dubstep and U.K.-garage elements. Additional 2012 releases included You Can Bring on Simple Records, Speicher 71 on Kompakt, and a split 12-inch with FaltyDL on Hemlock. The 2013 Warehouse Series EP Blades of Brasil, also on Turbo, highlighted a tougher dimension of his sound. By contrast, the brighter and more melodic Wants arrived on vinyl through Seinan Music and digitally through Aus Music. Further Aus Music titles followed: Make It Work in 2013, Gasp in 2015, and the atmospheric, ambient-tinged Space in Your Mind in 2016, which featured guest vocalists Will Samson and Daudi Matsiko. These were succeeded by the more dancefloor-directed EPs Holding in 2017 and Phase in 2018.
