A quintet based in New Jersey and devoted to progressive metalcore, Sentinels maintain an unrelenting touring schedule. Their ferocious sound hinges on fragmented, cutting grooves shaped by abrasive angular guitars, savage lead vocals, drumming that constantly shifts between sudden stops and explosive restarts, and bass tones that remain both jagged and heavily overdriven. The group treats studio work primarily as a means of expanding their already volatile, fury-driven live performances, shows that routinely drain yet captivate crowds. Their debut EP, the independently issued Idylls from 2013, drew notice from metal journalists, U.S. listeners, and discerning European fans alike, securing support slots on metal packages throughout the United States and Canada. The positive response to 2016’s World Divide then carried them overseas for the first time, yielding club headlining dates and elevated festival billing. Eventually they joined the Stay Sick Recordings roster to issue the extended EP Unsound Recollections in 2019.

The band formed in 2012 when bassist Danny Cruz, original drummer Kevin Gonzalez, guitarists Chris Dombrowski and Thomas Cardone, and vocalist Kyle Fellin united. Although most members arrived from prior groups, their central aim was simply to perform live as often as possible. Drawing inspiration from Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza, Structures, and Between the Buried and Me, they spent nearly a year refining material before entering the studio with producer Aaron Chaparian to record the self-released Idylls EP, which included guest contributions from Carmen Gurina of Borderlines and from Steve Cipparulo and Mike Dermek of Sirena. Sentinels spent roughly two years on the road, accepting virtually any local or national offer that came their way. In 2016 they reunited with Chaparian to complete the World Divide EP, featuring Joe Benducci—then a member of Born Divided—on lead vocals for the opening track “Decadence.” The vocalist connected immediately with the group. As metal outlets hailed Sentinels as a significant emerging act, their touring opportunities widened, and their association with Benducci deepened through repeated festival and package-tour encounters over subsequent years. In 2018 Fellin and Gonzalez departed, making room for Benducci and drummer Dave Rucki. The refreshed lineup released the single “Neurosis” and embarked on tours alongside Within the Ruins, Currents, Cryptodira, and Phinehas. Rucki’s arrival markedly intensified the band’s rhythmic drive, enabling more expansive songwriting. Capitalizing on the heightened energy and audience engagement of their concerts, Sentinels signed with Stay Sick and tracked the charting Unsound Recollections with producer Randy LeBoeuf, which appeared in February 2019.
