Sergio Vargas, recognized for his skill as a merengue performer, has also gained recognition for delivering additional Tropical styles such as ballads. Born in the Dominican Republic, he launched his career performing with the local ensemble La Banda Brava. In 1980 a rendition of José José's "Amor, Amor" secured second place for him in a talent competition. Two years afterward he began collaborating with Dionis Fernández, one of the nation's leading merengue figures. Vargas formed the band Los Hijos del Rey in 1986, reaching major-star status across Latin America by 1988 and starting regional tours that year. Later in 1988 he signed with CBS Records in the U.S., after which his debut album attained gold status. By 1991 he was working with Sony and continues to rank among his country's foremost artists.
