Biography
Anna Balfany, a Minnesota native recording as somegirlnamedanna, shapes an offbeat and at times buoyant strain of left-field pop that recalls modern figures such as Lorde while adding a candid confessional tone. She first surfaced in 2020.
Raised in the modest agricultural community of Webster, Minnesota, Balfany practiced jingles on the family’s antique grand piano and absorbed a love of singer-songwriters including Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, and Tori Amos from her mother, all while composing short stories and poetry for school assignments. That impulse later found its outlet in songwriting, which she developed during her college years in Nashville by cutting demos around classes and bartending shifts. The period also brought a contract with Lava Records, an imprint affiliated with Universal, and under the name somegirlnamedanna she reached listeners with the quirky electro-a cappella single “Hello I Am” in early 2020. Her debut EP, twenty one, twenty two, followed later that year.
