A trilingual vocalist and composer who blends pop with R&B, Sophia Black grew up in Los Angeles after being born there. French came to her through the local public schools, Japanese through her mother, and music through both parents, professional musicians whose tastes ranged widely. Songwriting began for her before she reached her teens. Drawn especially to R&B acts such as TLC and Destiny's Child, she placed that influence in the 2013 song “Everything Breaks,” which she cut for the Smurfs 2 soundtrack. The 2014 single “Vibration” marked her return; it joined the later tracks “OVR AGN” and “Anchor” on her debut EP, the atmospheric Sophia Black, which Kemosabe Records/RCA released in August 2015. One month afterward, a composition she co-wrote for Katharine McPhee appeared on the album Hysteria. Early in 2017 Black supplied the lead vocal for dance producer No Way Back’s “Minute,” and early the next year she joined rapper Kyle on the playful “Real Shit.”
