Biography
Claimed as Finland's pioneering doom metal act, Spiritus Mortis originated in 1987 under the initial moniker Rigor Mortis, established by siblings Teemu and Jussi Maijala. Extended periods of minimal activity spanning more than ten years followed, stemming from military obligations and additional interruptions, until vocalist Vesa Lampi came aboard in 2000. Around that period, longtime drummer VP Rapo transitioned to guitar duties, incorporating keyboards and flutes as well, which paved the way for Jarkko "Sepi" Seppälä to join on drums and finalize the present configuration by 2003. Multiple demos had been produced by then, earning positive attention from tape traders and niche publications, which secured a recording agreement with Rage of Achilles Records. Their style merged lethargic doom elements with faster traditional heavy metal approaches, culminating in the long-awaited self-titled debut album's release during January 2004.
