In 2000 the Vancouver-based alternative pop quartet Stabilo came into being. Fronting the group were singers and guitarists Jesse Dryfhout and Christopher John, who had first joined forces in the mid-’90s inside the high-school grunge band Molly, alongside bassist Karl Williaume and drummer Nathan Wylie. The four took their name from the Stabilo Boss highlighter they had used to jot down other candidate titles, and under that banner they independently issued their self-titled debut album in 2001. Once the song “Everybody” gained grassroots traction on XFM, the record moved more than five thousand copies; the band then shortened its name to Stabilo and secured a contract with EMI, which released the EP Cupid? in 2004. Their Brad Wood-produced full-length Happiness and Disaster appeared the following spring in 2006.
