The Australian indie pop outfit the Creases offers clear evidence that lively melodies and pizza can spark lasting creative results. Brisbane natives Joe Agius and Jarrod Mahon, longtime friends, spent a wet April 2013 evening ordering takeout and experimenting with guitars, which quickly generated song ideas. By the time the food was gone they had captured rough versions of “Fun to Lose” and “I Won’t Wait,” filmed one of the tracks, and uploaded the clip to YouTube under the Creases name. Weeks afterward Agius received an unsolicited note from Rough Trade’s Tom Travis, who had discovered the video and expressed interest in putting the songs out. October 2013 brought an official deal with the label; the two pizza-session recordings appeared as singles, while Agius and Mahon completed the lineup by adding bassist Aimon Clark and drummer Bridie McQueen. The quartet began constant live work across Australia and brief U.K. runs. In 2014 McQueen stepped aside for Gabe Webster, after which the group played major Australian festivals, supported the Jungle Giants, PEACE, and Franz Ferdinand, and made its U.S. bow at South by Southwest. A subsequent agreement with Liberation Music led the band into the studio under producer Simon “Berkfinger” Berckelman, where a stronger shoegaze direction shaped the July 2014 EP Gradient. Further touring and festival dates followed, along with exposure from singles such as “Point” and “Static Lines.” In conversations the members explained they were holding back a debut album until the material felt ready; that moment arrived when Liberation issued the full-length Tremolow in August 2017.
