Originating from Columbus, Ohio, the indie pop group Tiara came together in 1995 under the leadership of singer and guitarist Eric Rottmayer, already recognized in niche scenes for his solo work Metronome. The roster reached completion shortly afterward when guitarist Brian Freshour joined alongside his brother Craig on bass and drummer Brian Moore. Tiara’s first release arrived that same year in the form of the single “Birthmark,” issued as a split with Preston Furman; “Find the Time” appeared twelve months later. The band’s debut album, Calling the Whales, surfaced in 1998 via the Hub City imprint. Once the record was finished, Craig Freshour departed, after which Brian Freshour shifted to bass and Matt Leaver entered on guitar. Following the split single “Swingset” with Silver Scooter, the band returned in 1999 with the single “It’s a Message” and, the next spring, issued the album Again Cast In.
