Tobe Nwigwe emerged as a Houston rapper and singer whose work centers on uplifting themes and purposeful lyrics. His core goal, as he puts it, is to "make purpose popular." Listeners recognize him by his resonant yet soft delivery and nimble wordplay, while his steady output of tracks and accompanying videos each week often features his spouse Ivory Rogers, known as Fat, alongside producer LaNell Grant, or Nell. Collections such as the 2018 project The Originals gather many of these songs, and the 2020 single "Try Jesus" propelled him onto Billboard charts through widespread online circulation. His full-length studio album moMINTs arrived in 2022.

Born in Alief, Texas, a Houston suburb, Nwigwe is a first-generation Nigerian-American. He studied at the University of North Texas, where he excelled as a linebacker on the football squad until a foot injury ended his participation. Initial notice came in 2014 with the singles "Been Grinding" and "Coulda Woulda Shoulda," both featured on the EP Pardon My Lateness. Output intensified in 2017, when he issued Tobe from the Swat and a pair of Get Twisted Sundays mixtapes. Throughout 2018 he followed with numerous standalone tracks and videos, many later compiled on The Originals and More Originals. Visibility grew sharply in 2019 after an NPR Tiny Desk Concert appearance backed by a live band and the placement of "I'm Dope" on Michelle Obama's workout playlist. That same year saw the release of Three Originals, Fouriginals, and Tobe from the Swat: The Live Experience.

During July 2020 Nwigwe dropped the 44-second track "I Need You To (Breonna Taylor)," which demanded justice for the slain woman and quickly spread online. The next month brought even greater traction for "Try Jesus," which peaked at number four on Billboard's R&B Digital Song Sales chart. He took the stage at the 2020 BET Hip-Hop Awards and unveiled The Pandemic Project, The Pandemic Experience: Live Global Broadcast, and Cincoriginals, the latter featuring guest appearances by Black Thought, Big K.R.I.T., Bun B, and additional artists. The EP At the Crib Arrangements surfaced in 2021, followed in 2022 by the nearly three-hour The Monumintal Live Recording alongside the studio album moMINTs.
