Tom Wax

Thomas Wedel, who records as Tom Wax, reveals a clear affinity for vinyl formats through his output. Numerous singles remain exclusive to that medium, although selections surface on assorted European dance collections. Aligning with many fellow German DJs who emerged in the 1990s, he favors acid, trance, and progressive textures above other styles. His performing career began in the late 1980s, when teenage appearances at West German clubs drew enthusiastic responses from dancers. Studio activity commenced in 1991, quickly establishing him among Europe’s most active producers. Early collaborations paired him with Thorsten Adler, yielding well-received 12-inch titles such as “Freedom of Expression” and “Discover Your Innerself” for Sven Vath’s Harthouse imprint. The year 1993 found Wedel overseeing the Suck Me Plasma and Influence labels, issuing material via Harthouse, and developing the Tom & Norman partnership with Norman Feller. That project delivered the major club success “Tales of Mystery” and concluded with the album Final Exhibition. In 1994, renewed work with Adler under the AWeX banner—short for Adler and Wax experiments—produced the club anthem “It’s Our Future” together with the charting single “Back on Plastic.” Subsequent years involved joint ventures with additional European artists, independent releases, and construction of a personal studio in his native Darmstadt. The 1998 12-inch “NRG” registered strongly on German dance charts, while 1999 brought the single “Weekend of Love,” adopted as the official theme for Berlin’s Love Parade. Another chart-topping track, “Loud and Soft,” followed, created alongside DJs JamX and Dominik De Leon. From the late 1990s onward, the Tom Wax Mix Trax series has supplied regular compilation releases.
