Violent J

Born Joseph Frank Bruce, the Detroit rapper, producer, wrestler, and actor known as Violent J gained his greatest recognition as one member of the greasepaint-wearing hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse, sharing that spotlight with Shaggy 2 Dope, born Joseph Utsler. As the oldest of three siblings, he grew up amid modest means, relying on secondhand garments from rummage sales and provisions gathered through neighborhood food drives. After relocating to the Oak Park suburb, he crossed paths with Utsler, and the pair found themselves drawn into gang activity despite their hesitation. Their shared interest in rap soon took hold, leading them to issue the 1989 single “Party at the Top of the Hill” as the JJ Boys. At seventeen, following repeated encounters with law enforcement, Bruce briefly pursued professional wrestling before he, Utsler, and Utsler’s brother John established Inner City Posse. The group issued its sole album, Bass-Ment Cuts, in 1991 through Psychopathic Records, the imprint Bruce and his partners launched with the help of manager and record-store proprietor Alex Abbiss; that project later evolved into the widely successful Insane Clown Posse. On his own, Bruce has issued a modest selection of solo projects, among them Wizard of the Hood in 2003 and Shining in 2009.
