Growing up in northern Alberta, Canada, country singer Aaron Lines never anticipated a future in music. His childhood revolved around skating and hockey rather than any artistic pursuit. Fort McMurray, located 600 miles from the United States border, offered little in the way of a cultural center, yet he enjoyed a stable upbringing as the youngest of four children. At age 12 he surprised his parents—who had no musical background in the household—by requesting guitar lessons. The request led to a rewarding outcome: he soon mastered the instrument and began writing his own material.

To devote himself fully to music, he finished high school ahead of schedule. His self-penned debut single, “I Know I Shouldn't,” received modest airplay on hometown station KYX-98, and local interest grew steadily through the summer. Still, performing in pubs felt unnatural to the reserved and well-behaved young man, who needed time to become comfortable in front of audiences. He therefore concentrated on assembling homemade press kits, one of which eventually reached Arista while he was studying business at the University of Edmonton. The label encouraged further songwriting and recording, so with a small loan from his parents and a grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts he produced a polished two-song demo.

By age 20 his ambitions seemed attainable, and the next two years were spent traveling between Los Angeles, Nashville, and Canada. In spring 2001 he signed with RCA. Two years later his debut album, the charming and mature Living Out Loud, appeared. That release earned six Canadian Country Music Award nominations in 2003, including wins for Rising Star Award and Male Artist of the Year. His sophomore effort, Waitin' On The Wonderful, followed in 2005, with Moments That Matter arriving two years after that.
