Biography
ALASKALASKA crafts spirited, explorative indie rock grounded in grooves and pop melodies, launching the project with an explicit goal of creating songs that proved enjoyable both to compose and to deliver onstage. Aligning with similarly wide-ranging alternative groups like Talking Heads and tUnE-yArDs, the band’s off-kilter sound weaves vintage synths together with whimsical effects. Their first recording appeared as the ALASKALASKA EP in 2017.
Rooted in South London and drawing on participants from the area’s thriving jazz community, the ensemble was assembled by songwriter Lucinda Duarte-Holman on vocals and guitar alongside producer Fraser Rieley on bass, Calum Duncan on guitar, Gethin Jones on drums, Fraser Smith on saxophone, and Joe Webb on synths and keys. Duarte-Holman, Jones, Smith, and Webb had all relocated from Wales. The collective promptly joined Marathon Artists, which issued the self-titled debut EP in 2017. Their debut album, The Dots, arrived on the same imprint in 2019 after being tracked partly in Smith’s living room and partly alongside co-producer Tom Carmichael in a conventional studio environment.
