Alvaro Torres

From a young age in an impoverished Salvadoran household, singer and songwriter Alvaro Torres nurtured ambitions of music stardom. He absorbed the sounds of Latin pop figures such as Sandro and Camilo Sesto while performing purely to win approval from his relatives and advance toward that goal. After relocating to Guatemala, the skilled vocalist launched a solo trajectory by signing with the regional imprint DILA. His initial release, Algo Especial, surfaced in 1976, followed the next year by Acariciame, both shaped by arrangements from Bob Porter. Torres later established himself in the United States, residing first in Colorado, then California, before making Florida his permanent base. The 1990s brought his decisive rise, which began with the 1991 appearance of Nada Se Compara Contigo. In 1994, as his work scaled charts across Latin America, BMI named him Songwriter of the Year.
