Although Andy Davis has enjoyed notable success fronting his own ensembles throughout a lengthy rock & roll journey, his most widely recognized contributions have come through extensive sideman work. Occasionally credited as Andrew Cresswell Davis, he supplied acoustic guitar and backing vocals for John Lennon’s Imagine album. This musician must be distinguished from the prominent British conductor and keyboard artist who shares the name Andrew Davis.

In 1970 Davis established the eccentric country-rock outfit Stackridge, which secured major-label deals and issued six albums across five years on MCA, Elton John’s Rocket imprint, Warner Brothers, and Sire. The band’s third release, The Man in the Bowler Hat, extended the Beatles connection by featuring production from Sir George Martin. During 1979 Davis teamed with former Stackridge colleague James Warren to form the songwriting partnership that launched the Korgis.

Even with that project’s achievements, Davis continued to pursue additional collaborations, co-writing with Nashville’s Roger Cook, vocalist Yaz, Portishead’s Clive Deamer, and numerous others. He contributed guitar, keyboard, and vocal parts to recordings by Tears for Fears, Bill Nelson, Julian Cope, Spiritualized, Goldfrapp, and the experimental avant-garde composer and performer Moondog. Davis has also issued two albums under his own name.
