After years contributing behind the scenes as a songwriter, arranger, and background vocalist, Anthony Brown moved into the spotlight in 2012 by forming Anthony Brown & group therAPy. The distinctive spelling of the ensemble traces back to 2000, when the Maryland native first assembled Answered Prayers as a vehicle for his compositions. As his material appeared on successful gospel releases such as Maurette Brown-Clark’s The Dream (2007) and Stephen A. Hurd’s Times of Refreshing (2009), Answered Prayers gradually transformed into group therAPy. Appearances on BET’s Celebration of Gospel in 2006, 2007, and 2012 set the stage for the ensemble’s self-titled debut, issued that same year on Tyscot Records and featuring guest spots by Maurette Brown Clark and VaShawn Mitchell. The follow-up, Everyday Jesus, arrived in 2015 and ascended to the top of Billboard’s gospel albums chart, with the track “Worth” simultaneously claiming the number-one position on the gospel songs chart. Two years later came A Long Way from Sunday, marking the second chart-topping album for Brown and the group.
