Biography
Having built a foundation as part of 5 Seconds of Summer, one of Australia's most prominent musical exports that moved millions of albums and circled the globe, Ashton Irwin stepped into solo territory with the arrival of his first album, Superbloom, in 2020.
He came into the world in Hornsby, a Sydney suburb, where his childhood featured repeated household changes and assistance amid his mother's addictions. Music served as an outlet for creativity, leading him to study drumming under his uncle and step-father, both active in metal and punk groups. After finishing high school in 2012, he enrolled in college music courses yet withdrew to commit fully to 5 Seconds of Summer, the band he entered in 2011 by linking with Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, and longtime friend Michael Clifford.
A Sony agreement propelled the quartet to global success, marked by the release of four albums—5 Seconds of Summer in 2014, Sounds Good Feels Good in 2015, Youngblood in 2018, and Calm in 2020—alongside extensive touring. Beyond those efforts, Irwin supplied songwriting and drumming for Andy Black, Makeout, and the Faim ahead of his own project.
Early 2020 brought the first single from that venture, "Skinny Skinny," followed by "Have You Found What Ur Looking For" and "Scar," before Superbloom, with its contemporary pop/rock textures, appeared in October.
