The Australian singer-songwriter Luke Hemmings rose to prominence as lead vocalist of the pop band 5 Seconds of Summer. Following the release of four consecutive chart-topping albums with that act, he launched his solo career in 2021 through When Facing the Things We Turn Away From, an album that revealed a more mature alt-pop sensibility he later expanded upon with the 2024 Boy EP.

Hemmings entered the world in 1996 in Freemans Reach, New South Wales, Australia, and first picked up the guitar near the age of ten. After receiving formal instruction, he spent his teenage years performing as a street busker while uploading cover versions to the internet. During that same period he co-founded the punk-pop outfit 5 Seconds of Summer alongside school friends Calum Hood and Michael Clifford. The band quickly achieved widespread acclaim, joining One Direction on tour and securing number-one positions across multiple territories with its self-titled 2014 debut. Subsequent albums also reached the top of the charts, and by 2018 the group had evolved into a refined ensemble shaped by '90s alt-rock influences. Hemmings issued his first solo album, When Facing the Things We Turn Away From, in June 2021; the project featured the Sammy Witte-produced track "Starting Line," topped Australia's ARIA Albums chart, and registered on the Billboard 200. He resurfaced in 2024 with the Boy EP, highlighted by the shimmering, romantic alt-rock cut "Shakes."
