Juliet Simms channeled her distinctive vocal timbre and knack for crafting soaring compositions through several years performing on her own, prior to assembling Automatic Loveletter during 2007. The roster came together with Daniel Currier handling drums, Sean Noll on bass, and guitar duties split between Joe Nelson and Tommy Simms; the ensemble logged multiple months gigging across Tampa Bay venues before entering the studio under emo-pop producer Matt Squire. Although Automatic Loveletter initially tasked Squire with completing a full album, the effort was pared back, resulting in several tracks surfacing on the Recover EP that same year.

Epic Records backed an extensive touring schedule throughout most of 2008, after which Recover received a re-release tied to a Hot Topic promotion, yet mounting friction prompted repeated label requests for Simms to revise her songs. The band ultimately moved to Sony Independent Network, where Juliet Simms prepared fresh material for sessions with producer Josh Abraham. Those recordings yielded Truth or Dare, the group’s first full-length release in June 2010, now featuring an updated lineup that added Clint Fowler and Ryan Metcalf alongside the Simms siblings.
