Carlos Alberto Vidal entered the world in Coimbra’s Lousa district during 1954, later earning recognition among Portuguese listeners of every generation under the name Avo Cantigas. Public performances at parties and gatherings began when he turned seven, at which point he already sensed a lifelong vocation for music. Relocating to Cascais upon reaching twelve, he threw himself into every available stage opportunity that combined music with theater. Guitar lessons followed, enabling him to support his own voice, and formal studies commenced at the National Conservatory of Music. While still a teenager he started placing original material with a publishing house, functioning simultaneously as lyricist and composer. His first album, As Filhas da Tia Anica, appeared in 1973. Extensive touring and further studio work occupied the subsequent years, yielding eight albums by the close of 1982. That same year the project As Cantigas do Alvo Cantigas introduced the persona Avo Cantigas—Grandfather Cantigas—which rapidly grew into one of the most cherished figures in Portuguese children’s repertoire. Television exposure multiplied immediately afterward, propelling Vidal to sudden national prominence. Throughout the two-decade span of the Cantigas character, the songs achieved such widespread familiarity that Portuguese elementary schools incorporated them into standard instruction. Marking the twentieth anniversary in 2002, Vidal issued E Bom Ser Assim, an expansive collection that included contributions from guest musicians António Pinho Vargas, João Gil, and Jorge Palma among others. Columbia later commemorated the twenty-fifth anniversary by issuing Fantasminha Brincalhao, Vidal’s twenty-seventh original album.
