Biography
Originating in Leeds, United Kingdom, Black Moth assembled during 2010 once the garage rock band the Bacchae had disbanded. The lineup featured Harriet Bevan handling vocals, Jim Swainston on guitar, Dave Vachon on bass, and Dom McCready on drums, steering the group toward a denser, more sluggish style shaped by Black Sabbath, Melvins, and Mötorhead. Their first full-length release, The Killing Jar, arrived in 2012 via New Heavy Sounds and was helmed by Jim Sclavunos, drummer for both Grinderman and the Bad Seeds. Support slots across the U.K. alongside Turbowolf that same year expanded the quartet’s reach. Two years later the band issued Condemned to Hope, again produced by Sclavunos and adorned with cover art from Roger Dean, whose imagery had long defined sleeves for Yes, Budgie, and other 1970s progressive-rock acts. Extensive touring throughout the U.K. and Europe followed over the ensuing twelve months, including shows backing L7, Amplifier, and Sisters of Mercy. In 2017 the musicians returned to the studio to cut a third album after guitarist Federica Gialanze joined the fold, resulting in Anatomical Venus, which Candlelight Records brought out at the start of 2018.
