Biography
Brad Cotter, who captured the 2004 Nashville Star crown as a country performer, once stated that music functions as both his existence and his soulmate. Raised in Auburn, Alabama, where his father worked as a preacher, Cotter first encountered the emotional reach of melody while performing in the local church choir, an experience that crystallized his resolve to pursue music indefinitely. He put out five gospel albums between ages eleven and seventeen, all while mastering piano, guitar, drums, and bass. At twenty-five he began supplying his voice for demonstration recordings and crafting material for Warner/Chappell and EMI Music.
Lacking a solo contract, Cotter entered Nashville Star, the country counterpart to American Idol. Audiences responded to his striking appearance, firm delivery, and courteous, affable presence amid stiff competition that peaked in the finale against the more traditional George Canyon. There he sang his own “I Miss Me” and delivered a striking take on Tom Petty’s “The Waiting,” claiming both the victory and the resulting deal. After “being turned down by every label in Nashville at least four times,” he signed with Sony Music Nashville, which issued his debut album, Patient Man, in July of 2004.
