Formed in Louisville in 2002, Breather Resist built its lineup around guitarist Evan Patterson—previously active in Black Cross and the National Acrobat—along with bassist Nick Thieneman, drummer Geoff Paton, and vocalist Steve Sindoni. Drawing from Deadguy, the Jesus Lizard, Kiss It Goodbye, and Hoover (the source of the band’s name), the quartet contributed tracks to several Initial Records releases. Their raw, discordant hardcore-and-metal approach surfaced fully on the 2003 album Only in the Morning, issued by Deathwish. The group next aligned with Jade Tree Records, even though its aggressive style contrasted with the label’s prevailing indie and emo catalog. Working with producer Kurt Ballou of Cave In and Isis, the band delivered a more dynamic second album, Charmer, in October 2004. After Steve Sindoni exited in December 2005, the remaining members continued without a new singer, shifting vocal duties to Evan Patterson. By mid-2006 the material had evolved beyond Breather Resist’s earlier sound, leading the trio to retire its prior recordings and adopt the name Young Widows. The first release under that name, Settle Down City, appeared that fall on Jade Tree. Sindoni later joined the Louisville-based band Pusher.
