Hailing from Stafford, England, where he was born Matthew James Burns in 1985, BURNS built a career as a Los Angeles-based producer and DJ whose output bridges indie and dance spheres through original high-energy tracks plus remixes and productions for artists such as Britney Spears, Rihanna, Liam Payne, French Montana, Louis Tomlinson, and Little Mix. He surfaced on the scene in the late 2000s with his own singles and remixes for Calvin Harris, Gossip, Yuksek, and additional acts. The nu-disco single “Y.S.L.M. (You Stopped Loving Me),” a 2010 collaboration with Fred Falke, became a club hit after its release. That year also brought the double-mix set This Is Burns, Vol. 1 on Music Response, followed in 2011 by the club smash “Lies,” several of whose remixes appeared, with Otto Knows’ version achieving the widest reach. Further singles arrived alongside remixes for Charli XCX and Iggy Azalea and production credits on hits including Ellie Goulding’s “Midas Touch” and Pitbull’s “All the Things.”

His 2014 relocation to Los Angeles introduced the city’s summery, multicultural atmosphere into his work. After issuing singles on Doorn and Spinnin’ Records and producing Britney Spears’ Top 20 hit “Make Me...,” he signed with RCA Records and delivered the 2017 single “Far Gone.” A series of BURNS singles followed in 2018, among them “Angel,” “Worst,” and “Hands on Me,” the last featuring Maluma and Rae Sremmurd as the first English-language feature for Maluma. In 2019 he released the single “Energy,” featuring A$AP Rocky and Sabrina Claudio.
