Los Angeles all-female rock quartet Cherri Bomb drew its name from Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna’s book Cherry Bomb: The Ultimate Guide to Becoming a Better Flirt, a Tougher Chick, and a Hotter Girlfriend -- and to Living Life Like a Rock Star rather than the classic Runaways track. Fronted by singer/guitarist Julia Pierce, the group includes drummer Nia Lovelis, bassist Rena Lovelis, and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Miranda Miller. Pierce assembled Nia and Miller after holding auditions for similarly minded young players drawn to the sounds of Garbage, Foo Fighters, and My Chemical Romance. The search for a bassist concluded once Nia’s sister Rena mastered the instrument, allowing the quartet to begin performing live, among other shows at events tied to Chelsea Girls, the side project of drummer Samantha Maloney, whose résumé includes stints with Hole, Peaches, Mötley Crüe, and the Eagles of Death Metal. Impressed by the band’s layered harmonies and driving riffs, Maloney signed on as manager and booked opening slots for Filter, Smashing Pumpkins, and Foo Fighters; Cherri Bomb also recorded a version of the latter’s “The Pretender” for their 2011 Hollywood Records debut EP, Stark. Their first full-length album, This Is the End of Control, followed the next May.
