Clã, whose name translates as “clan,” rose to prominence as a fixture of Portuguese pop during the 1990s and 2000s on the strength of refined musical judgment and an instinctive pop approach. The six founding members—Helder Goncalves on piccolo bass, Manuela Azevedo on vocals, Miguel Ferreira and Pedro Biscaia on keyboards, Pedro Rito on bass, and Fernando Goncalves on drums—first assembled in 1992. Their initial EMI album, LusoQualquerCoisa, appeared four years later in 1996 and launched an extended partnership that yielded seven releases over slightly more than a decade. Expanding catalog depth was matched by widening audiences and mounting recognition; live performances in particular drew fervent support because the band’s stage command regularly surpassed the impact of its studio work. Reviewers and commercial metrics alike responded favorably to each successive project. Cintura, issued in 2007, reached number 13 on the Portuguese charts.
