Born to Kenny Loggins of Loggins & Messina renown, Crosby Loggins spent his childhood in Santa Barbara, California, where his father’s musical circle—Jackson Browne, Michael McDonald, Graham Nash, and others—regularly visited the family home. Drawn early to the same path, he began piano lessons at seven and picked up guitar at thirteen. Local bands occupied his high-school years until a stretch in Hawaii preceded a return to California and work as a house builder. Music persisted, however, prompting him to assemble a band that first performed as Crosby Loggins & the Leadbirds, later Crosby Loggins & the Namedroppers, and finally Crosby Loggins & the Light. Under the last name the group issued its 2007 debut, We All Go Home, on which Loggins wrote or co-wrote ten of the twelve tracks. That promise drew the attention of MTV producers casting Rock the Cradle, the reality competition pairing offspring of established artists in an American Idol format. After declining three invitations, Loggins joined the 2008 season and claimed the title, concluding the run with a duet performance of “I’m Alright,” the song his father had written and taken to prominence in 1980. His follow-up effort, the solo album Time to Move, arrived on Jive Records in 2009 and included a guest guitar appearance by John Mayer.
