Dagon hails from Lansing, Michigan, and should not be mistaken for the similarly named hermetic black metal group based in Dallas, since this northern outfit specializes in a melodic fusion of thrash and death metal. The band formed in 2004, featuring Briant Daniel on guitar alongside Chris "Lance" Sharrock on guitar, Randall Ladiski handling bass and vocals, and Jordan "Truck" Batterbee on drums and vocals, with the latter three also participating in the Christian metal outfit Bestiary. Even though Dagon is attached to a Christian imprint, their songwriting only occasionally references religious themes among various other subjects, as shown across their output including the 2005 EP Secrets of the Deep, the 2007 full-length Paranormal Ichthyology, the 2008 EP Buried Treasure, and the 2009 album Terraphobic.
