Born on July 1, 1982, as Daniel Lee Chee Hun, the Malaysian singer who performed under the name Daniel Lee rose to prominence as a leading pop star in his country. Victory in the second season of the reality competition Malaysian Idol brought him immediate recognition, after which he issued his debut single, "Mimpi" ("Dream," in English), toward the end of 2005. That track achieved strong success and paved the way for his self-titled debut album shortly afterward. His second studio effort, Unavoidable, arrived in 2007. Once a coffee shop performer, Lee attracted a devoted following called the Pinkies, a name derived from his habit of wearing pink T-shirts while competing on Malaysian Idol. He also took on several television roles that year, serving briefly as a host and appearing as a guest actor in the drama series Sky.
