Forming the British club and dance duo Dark Monks are Jan Carbon and James Reynolds. Early in the 1990s Jan Carbon launched his DJ career, then joined two partners to open a record outlet in London’s Covent Garden that later expanded into his own retail chain. James Reynolds, distinct from the Afro-American actor of the same name, had previously contributed to assorted UK dance-music projects. The electronica outfit introduced itself with “Insane,” a single issued on Nick Halves’ London-based Incentive Records that drew samples from Moby’s 1992 self-titled album and its dance-pop hit “Go,” featured vocals by newcomer Mim, and was reworked by Steve Murano.
