Biography
Dead Letter Circus formed in Brisbane, Queensland, during 2005 as an Australian alternative rock outfit steeped in progressive textures. The founding lineup featured vocalist Kim Benzie, guitarist Rob Maric, bassist Stewart Hill, and drummer Luke Williams, with sonic touchstones that encompassed Faith No More, Muse, the Mars Volta, and Radiohead. Their first commercial release arrived via the six-track EP Dead Letter Circus in 2007, issued through MGM Distribution and anchored by the single “Disconnect and Apply.” A follow-up EP, Next in Line, surfaced the next year and yielded both “Reaction” and the breakout track “Next in Line.” After inking a deal with Warner Music, the group unveiled its full-length debut, This Is the Warning, in 2010. Produced by Forrester Savell, the album climbed to number two on the Australian albums chart and spotlighted the singles “The Space on the Wall” and “Big.” Founding guitarist Rob Maric exited in 2013, the same year Tom Skerlj and Clint Vincent joined the fold; that period also brought the critically praised sophomore album Catalyst Fire, which likewise entered the Australian chart at number two. An acoustic EP titled Stand Apart followed in 2014, succeeded the next year by the third studio album Aesthesis, again peaking at number two and led by the single “While You Wait.” In 2017 the band issued The Endless Mile, a collection of unplugged reinterpretations drawn from its earlier catalog.
