Biography
Melbourne's metalcore quartet Dream on Dreamer first appeared in 2009 as an Aria-nominated outfit whose approach fused post-hardcore intensity with the melodic breadth of contemporary rock. Their 2011 debut long-player Heartbound brought commercial traction, after which Loveless in 2013 and Songs of Soulitude in 2015 both registered strongly on domestic charts. Citing repeated lineup shifts, health setbacks, and legal complications, the band chose to dissolve in 2020 following the arrival of their fifth album What if I Told You It Doesn't Get Better.
The five founding members—vocalist Marcel Gadacz, lead guitarist Callan Orr, drummer Aaron Fiocca, bassist and clean vocalist Michael McLeod, and keyboardist Daniel Jungwirth—had previously played in various local groups before uniting in 2009. Their opening EP Set Sail, Armada surfaced that July. The follow-up EP Hope appeared the next year on Boomtown and drew the interest of Rise Records, which promptly signed the act.
Heartbound, recorded under the guidance of producer Cameron Mizell, reached stores in 2011 and secured an Aria nomination in the Best Rock/Metal Album category. Support slots alongside Avenged Sevenfold and We Came as Romans broadened their reach beyond Australia; by 2012 the group was performing overseas while McLeod exited after becoming a parent. Zachary Britt arrived on rhythm guitar and clean vocals in 2013 as the band delivered Loveless through Melbourne indie UNFD. Touring in support of that release included dates with A Day to Remember, Silverstein, and the Devil Wears Prada, though Fiocca missed several shows while receiving cancer treatment. Jungwirth left in 2014; Chris Shaw of House vs. Hurricane stepped in and made his recorded debut on 2015's Songs of Soulitude. The 2018 album It Comes and Goes placed greater weight on clean vocals without abandoning the group's post-hardcore foundation. Two years later Dream on Dreamer revealed plans to disband and issued one last record, What if I Told You It Doesn't Get Better, which surfaced in April 2020.
