Growing up as the daughter of Marcia Hines, the Boston expatriate who became a legendary performer in Australia with a string of Top Ten singles during the 1970s, gave Deni Hines an early immersion in the entertainment industry. She started out providing backing vocals for acts including Wa Wa Nee and Peter Blakeley. Widespread public notice first arrived when she fronted the Sydney-based group the Rockmelons. With Hines serving as lead singer, the band scored multiple Australian hits in 1990 such as "Ain't No Sunshine," "That Word (L.O.V.E.)," and "It's Not Over," after which she departed. Prior to launching a solo career, Hines performed in a stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Her first single, "It's Alright," reached the Australian Top Ten in 1996 and registered on charts in Japan and France, while her debut album Imagination established her as an international star. She relocated to the U.K. to promote the album under its retitled version Pay Attention and shared tours with the Lighthouse Family and Earth, Wind & Fire. The remix collection Remix Your Imagination appeared in 1997.
