Originating as the German adaptation of Simon Fuller's Pop Idol format, Deutschland Sucht den Superstar—commonly abbreviated as DSDS—debuted on the RTL network during October 2002. Swiss actress Michelle Hunziker and ex-soap opera performer Carsten Spengemann served as the initial co-hosts, while the judging panel consisted of Dieter Bohlen, a composer and producer previously associated with Modern Talking, alongside radio presenter Thomas Bug, British music journalist Shona Fraser, and Thomas M. Stein, who had formerly led BMG Germany. Bohlen's sharp critiques played a major role in transforming the program into a massive ratings hit, drawing more than 12 million viewers to the March 8, 2003 season finale where Alexander Klaws overcame Juliette Schoppman. The win secured Klaws a BMG recording contract, and his first single, the Bohlen-composed "Take Me Tonight," entered the German charts at number one. Although the fall 2003 launch of season two attracted fewer viewers than the inaugural run, the series retained strong audience loyalty; on the March 13, 2004 finale, Elli Erl prevailed over Denise Tillmanns, yet both contestants achieved far less commercial traction than Klaws. Season three brought extensive changes, including the replacement of Hunziker and Spengemann by new co-hosts Marco Schreyl and Tooske Ragas, while Bohlen remained the sole returning judge and was joined by music producer Sylvia Kollek plus Heinz Henn, a former artist management executive. Viewership rose steadily across the season, culminating in Tobias Regner's victory over Mike Leon Grosch at the March 18, 2005 finale. Regner's debut release "I Still Burn" reached the top position in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, even as Grosch secured his own German number-one hit with "Don't Let It Get You Down."
