Thomas Godoj, a singer and songwriter blending Polish and German roots in the pop and rock idioms, achieved widespread recognition by claiming victory in the fifth season of Deutschland Sucht den Superstar. He entered the world on March 6, 1978, in Rybnik, Poland, before relocating with his family in 1988 to Recklinghausen in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region. During his time as a civil engineering student at Bochum University of Applied Sciences, Godoj took the stage with several local rock outfits, an activity that prompted him to try out for Deutschland Sucht den Superstar, the Pop Idol-format competition. His audition succeeded, and he ultimately prevailed in the 2007-2008 edition by delivering Sunrise Avenue's "Fairytale Gone Bad," Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars," and his original composition "Love Is You" during the finale. The triumph yielded a Sony BMG recording deal, after which his debut solo album, Plan A!, appeared in 2008. That release dominated the album charts in Germany and Austria while reaching number three in Switzerland, and the same year's "Love Is You" likewise topped the singles rankings across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Lithuania, and Luxemburg.
