Martin Knowles, performing as Emalkay, fused grime, garage, reggae, and drum'n'bass into suspenseful productions that earned him regular support from dubstep DJs in the late 2000s. The Birmingham, England native first issued garage material in the early 2000s, placing a pair of EPs on his own Morphic Sounds label in 2005. Signing to the dubstep imprint Boka Records in 2006 prompted a shift toward slower, darker, and more tense material built around booming bass and spacious yet busy arrangements. After several singles for Boka and a well-received remix of TRG's "Killed It Dead," he debuted on Caspa's Dub Police label with the early-2009 single "Explicit." Later that year the anthemic "When I Look at You" appeared and became his most recognized track. Further singles plus remixes for Pendulum, Miike Snow, King Cannibal, and additional artists led to the 2011 release of his debut album, Eclipse. The ragga-flavored single "Flesh & Bone" arrived in 2012, followed by the producer's move into trap on 2013's For the People EP. Emalkay and Caspa joined forces for the 2014 single "Tomorrow," and his remix of the Glitch Mob's "Skullclub" surfaced in 2015.
