Embodyment came together in 1993 when high school friends Andrew Godwin on guitar, Mark Garza on drums, Kevin Donnini on bass, and Jason Lindquist on guitar began operating within the metal and hardcore environment of Dallas, Texas. Four years of work that produced three demos and numerous concerts with touring bands such as No Innocent Victim, Zao, Training For Utopia, and P.O.D. led to Kris MaCaddon assuming vocal responsibilities after Jason Lindquist exited, at which point James Lanigan joined as the second guitarist. A 1997 contract with Tooth and Nail Records resulted in the 1998 appearance of their first full-length Embrace the Eternal along with multiple national tours. Once the group returned to Texas, further changes occurred when Jason Lindquist reclaimed the bass slot and both guitarist James Lanigan and bassist Kevin Donnini departed, clearing the way for The Narrow Scope of Things in spring 2000. Strong sales of that release enabled the band to issue Hold Your Breath the following year.
